Caldas de Reis is best known for its hot springs (caldas). They still exist, but the tradition of putting your feet into the fountain is discouraged for obvious hygienic reasons. All the same really, a hot soak after a hot day of walking isn’t the best of plans. To see the springs (and to follow the camino), turn left after crossing the first bridge in town.

The camino passes through the old quarter before arriving at another bridge, on the opposite end of which is the municipal albergue and the way out of town.

The church in town is dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket, one of very few of the sort in Spain and possibly the only one in Galicia. If you are only passing through town in the afternoon, the palm trees that surround the church make for a cooling place to relax.

The Road

On the way out of town, it is once more along the N550 (which frankly will be the case frequently between here and Santiago). Leave it to your right at the first bend in the road.

I came here slightly too early for menu del dia, but the waiter was really nice about it and I waited with a cafe con leche. He came back and took my order as soon as it was the right time - I really appreciated that! It seemed like a busy place with the locals too because there were 2 tables reserved next to me for lunch. Pilgrims menu was €16 and it tasted good and the portions were large.

Looked like a great place, but make sure you make reservations in order to get a table

I stayed here in a private room for 20euro. There were 3 beds in the room, so I assume I normally would have had roommates on any other day. I think I got really lucky—there were probably less than 10 people in the whole albergue. I had an entire floor and bathroom to myself. There’s a kitchen on the floor too with a great balcony. There’s an entire other floor of private rooms, too. The owner works a bar/cafe on the property, was very sweet, and served a great breakfast. Highly recommend!

Had a comfortable stay at Pension Caldas. Good double room, excellent bed. Everything clean. Find them on booking.com for an affordable break from bunkbeds!

We stayed at Pensión Caldea in a private room but shared bathroom(but it felt like our own). One of the most comfortable bed on our trip. It has a espresso machine, kettle, tea, etc. Highly recommended. The host owns a hair salon that is located in the same building. If you’re a pilgrim that needs some relaxation after you arrive at Caldas de Reis, you can get a hair wash at Sonia’s at a very good price. You might fall asleep because the chair has build in massage. She will give you many recommendations also.

A great location just over the river and on the route. It is clean and comfortable. I was able to wash my clothes then dry for €2. There is a kitchen also. Shower pressure great and my bed was super comfortable at the back of the pension. I highly recommend this as a place to stay. Over the road from a great restaurant beside the river and about 100m from the hot mineral springs pool.

We stayed at Albergue Celenis. Despite it is not central, it is worth the extra steps. Comfortable bunk beds, very clean and with a small pool. We stayed an extra day which is worth it at Caldas de Reis. Because they have a beautiful waterfall. Had to walk, not a problem, its why I suggest to stop a day at Caldas. Great views and amazing experience!

You are welcomed by Yolande with a big greeting welcoming you like you are coming home . Updated price is 20 euro with breakfast . Loved the clean beds , toilets are allocated to names . Upstairs are sleeping quarters with curtains and the current photo doesn’t show the renovations made . There is a kitchen to use with permission and microwave as well .there is a keyboard piano , guitar and all sorts of instruments to chill with .
There’s a nice outdoor seating area with a mulberry tree to pick off . Our 5 year old son had so many toys to play with as well .
A memorable stay that will finish my camino nicely !
Ps : you don’t want to miss this stamp !
