A pleasant but small town with a quirky mix of albergues. There are a number of restaurants in town that offer meals throughout the day.

The Road

Just outside of town, on your left-hand side and likely obscured by tall grass, sits one of San Juan de Ortega’s smaller engineering feats. It only takes one span to cross the diminutive río Vena.

Just had dinner at El Alquimista and WOW— truly some of the best food I’ve ever eaten! Served by a kind and personable couple who make it all themselves. What a treat! Around 16,5 for a pilgrim meal— soup, meat + tortilla, and a dessert with wine, and all generous portions too! Could not recommend this place enough!

The bar was clean and well decorated, coffee ok. The owners were unpleasant and difficult to work with.

...at La Rústica - they are excellent.

Don't stay here if you can help it. We were all charged full price and not told that there was no hot water. People complained, but the hosts didn't seem interested.

I stayed at the he Albergue La Taberna ( Another sign says Municipal) and there was minimal hot water. Everybody complained about it. Also in the room I stayed in they had four fluorescent tube in a loft area that were supposed to stay on for emergencies. But the room was way too bright and eventually we asked that they turned them off which they did by circuit breaker. In the morning we turned those back on but out of 15 pilgrims no one could figure out how to turn on the regular lights.

However, I found the Albergue clean and they did take my reservation, which is why stayed there. Previously I stayed in Albergue Fagus which is nicer.

The Pajar Albergue has a for sale sign on it and was not open. It’s website says May 2024 opening.

But the Alquimista restaurant is still there and the food is wonderful! That’s where you’re going for dinner! And Ages has a very nice vibe.- March 2024.

while The Alquimista is open, and has tasty food, the owner aas clear that he doesnt make fast-food… so those with burger dreams per the earlier comments, like me…will have your dreams dashed.

El Rustica has been reopened. The building is a beautifully restored space. The owners are great and the food is wonderful. Definitely stop by!

Camino de Sant…

This place was recommended to us and thank God! I am 58 years old and have lapped this planet over a hundred times. I can say, unequivocally, that this is, and will probably always be, the best Burger I have ever tasted. It is the food equivalent of an Angel crying on your tongue.
