Wise Pilgrim APPArnéguy sits right on the French-Spanish border, straddling the Nive river. It's the first settlement on the Valcarlos Route after leaving Saint Jean Pied de Port, about 8 km down the valley. A couple of bars, a few shops, and some accommodation options. The border crossing itself is unmarked and unremarkable — you simply walk across the bridge and you're in Spain.
Cross the main road (D933/N-135) and the bridge into Spain. The route follows a country road lower in the valley, bringing you into Valcarlos from below. The walking is flat and easy along the river.
